Summary
‘The Doll Factory’ by Elizabeth Macneal is a haunting tale about obsession set against the backdrop of Victorian London. Iris and her twin sister, Rose seemed destined to work in a doll factory forever. However, by a twist of cruel fate, Iris is given the opportunity to experience the life she has always wanted, but soon that goes awry…
Iris dreams about becoming a painter and being able to freely express her emotions and points of view through art, but her position in society keeps these hopes far from reach. But, she sees a glimmer of hope when she is asked to sit for a portrait by a young artist. Just when things seem to be too good to be true, Iris becomes the centre of one man’s obsession and he will stop at nothing to complete his collection of beautiful ‘art’.
My Thoughts
I enjoyed this novel. Iris is a very capable, feisty heroine, even though she is used to living in her sister’s shadow. I enjoyed seeing her come into her own and take charge of her life. The suspense in this novel is done really well, but there are periods where nothing in particular happens. Sometimes it can be difficult to get through lulls in plots, but I quite enjoyed them here. Mainly because it gives the reader a glimpse into the time period in which the novel is set. The historic aspect is woven well into the story line and there are mentions of specific historic events so that you can orientate yourself.
Who Would Enjoy This?
This book is a must-read for anyone who loves a gothic novel, tales of suspense or loves art. They do talk a lot about paintings and painters so it really helps if you are into that. Be warned, this novel does have some trigger warnings regarding animal cruelty.
